Responsible Pet Ownership Requirements...

Responsible Pet Ownership is more than feeding and grooming... it is a lifestyle of responsibility toward your pet. If you are considering having a pet join your family, there are many things to consider. Try to imagine your lifestyle from the perspective of a knee-high furry friend.

What would you need to change or alter to make both of you feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed? Would you need to fence your property? Would you have to puppy-proof your home? Can you afford another family member?

All pets require:

Regular healthcare and grooming
Licensing and required immunizations
A warm, dry quiet place to sleep
Plenty of attention and affection
Consistant training and understanding
A healthy and nutritious diet
A loving caretaker, if you travel

Limited environment (Fencing, or a safe space)
Appropriate toys of their own
Plenty of fresh water to drink

Are you prepared to care for all of these needs and many more? If so, you will find yourself loved, entertained, and loyally followed, in return.

1-2-3...THE ART OF MEETING AND GREETING A PET

You’re out playing, or walking home from school, and you see an owner with his pet . . . it looks so-o-o cute, and you’d really like to meet it. Well, there are some rules to follow to make sure you AND the pet are happy about meeting!

1: Approach from the front . . . quietly, and slowly. Be sure the animal can see you.

2: Ask the owner . . . “May I pet your dog?” before you approach.

3: If the owner says it's OK, you offer the pet the back side of your hand (which is non-threatening), and maybe squat down to their level, so the pet gets to decide if they would like a new friend. When you can see that the animal is not scared or hiding shyly behind its owner’s leg, not growling or barking aggressively- it’s a good time for a scratch under the chin or a rub behind the ears..
